knight rider’ replica to be on show at sidewayz@ da market, don’t miss it

IF YOU are driving around Durban and happen to see the Knight Rider car, Kitt, on the road don’t be surprised.

Durban local Vishnu Naicker has become the city’s very own Michael Knight in his 1986 black Transam Firebird, which is an exact working replica of Kitt, the talking, crime-fighting car of the hit 1980s television series Knight Rider.

“It all started in 1992 when I drove past the American car sales showroom and saw this amazing white Pontiac Firebird,” said Naicker.

The Durban businessman got a chance to start the Firebird engine in the showroom, and was immediately taken by the robust American car’s brute V8 engine.

Naicker bought the car in 1998, but it was not his intention to transform it into a replica of Michael Knight’s car at first.

“But after visiting the U.S he found out it was possible to turn this Firebird into his ultimate dream car,” said Michael Chetty from Msunduzi Racing Club.

“I started my journey, searching for information on the Internet and reading magazines, until one day I found a website which directed me to the companies responsible for building the original Knight Rider car,” said Naicker, who then went to visit these companies.

When Naicker returned to South Africa, he started importing the parts he needed to build his own Knight Rider car.

“It took me six years to build Kitt… It is the only one of its kind in South Africa.”

Naicker’s Kitt will be on show at sidewayz@da market, to be hosted by the Msunduzi Racing Club at the Municipal Market in Mkondeni on Saturday, starting at 6.30 pm.
