kwaMashu by-election goes down peacably

2012-12-06 00:00

BY-ELECTIONS held at kwaMashu, Durban, proceeded smoothly yesterday under the watchful eyes of police.

The by-election — one of four in KwaZulu-Natal — was held to fill a seat left vacant by the murder of IFP councillor Themba Xulu in September.

His death sparked political tensions in the area, especially between the IFP and National Freedom Party. NFP members were later arrested in connection with Xulu’s death.

Yesterday, the area was calm as motorcades of the IFP, NFP and ANC were escorted by the police, while supporters of the parties sang political songs metres apart from each other outside the voting stations.

KwaZulu-Natal electoral commissioner Mawethu Mosery said voting went smoothly in all the by-elections, with no security issues being experienced.

The results of the elections were not available at the time of going to press.
