lembethe and mr price take top honours in merewent 10?km run on saturday

SANDILE Lembethe won the flat Merewent 10 km on Saturday in a relatively slow time of 31 minutes 41 seconds, having opened almost 150 metres over Zimbabwean Shingie Budza of the Formula One Bluff Meats club.

Budza had the consolation of taking the 35-39 award. The final podium spot went to Lembethe’s Mr Price club-mate Vusi Cele, which laid the foundation for the team award to be won by that club.

Chatsworth’s leading junior took line honours in the women’s race — the only woman to get under the 40-minute barrier in a time of 39,52. In second place and 160 metres adrift was Jenny Sutton in 40,31.

With SA Nedbank 10 km championships coming up on Saturday, Thubalethu Phaku’s participation in the tough Isitolo Nongoma Half-Marathon was something of a surprise, but the talented Durban University of Technology athlete was a clear winner in 1:09,03.

Mr Price’s Professor Mollen proved Phaku’s closest rival some 500 metres adrift, with Nedbank’s Simon Tsoanyane almost a full kilometre off the winning pace in 1:11,55.

By comparison, the women’s race was tightly contested, with Boxer’s Iris Ndlovu only getting the better of Eskom Gijimas’ Sibongile Ziqubu by 200 m to take the tape in 1:38,58.

Runners are reminded that entries for the midlands 100-mile race between Winterton and Pietermaritzburg close on Friday. For more information, contact John Hall at 082 491 7679.
