‘noseweek’ editor wins top honour

2008-05-16 00:00

Cape Town — The founder editor of the investigative magazine, noseweek, Martin Welz received an honorary award in Sanlam’s Financial Journalist of the Year awards for promoting corporate governance.

Welz was lauded for his “unrelenting” investigative financial journalism in the magazine, which prides itself in producing “news you’re not supposed to know”.

The magazine has been threatened with legal action and sued many times, but none of the legal actions has ever been successful.

Announcing the award, Professor Anton Harber, director of the Wits School of Journalism and Media Studies, said the judges decided to give Welz the award, despite the fact that he had not entered the contest.

Accepting the award, Welz said noseweek would not be what it is without its readers. “The fact that we have the kind of readers we do … is a credit to our country.”
