SOUTH AFRICAN youngsters are being encouraged to know their rights and act more responsibly via Mxit.

The initiative, called “smrtCitizens”, aims at equipping the youth to vote and offers tools to help them change and shape their futures.

According to Katherine van Wyk, programme director with Every1Mobile, which developed social network, smrtCitizen is able to talk to the youth in a language that they understand.

“Research shows that young people are willing to contribute to a better future,” she said.

Users can report injustice, join campaigns and take part in community action and debate groups.

There is a section for current news as well.

Mbulelo, who is a smrtCitizen, said he started a peer group at his school after many pupils were involved in drugs.

Mxit has more than 32 million users.
