south coast mother and son both pass matric

2012-01-06 00:00

IT isn’t often that a parent and child complete matric in the same year. Premi (47) and Brandon (18) Naidoo of Park Rynie have done just that.

The Naidoos celebrated their second matriculant for 2011 yesterday when their youngest child and only son received his results.

Brandon was a pupil at Umzinto Secondary School. Mum, Premi, wrote her exams in May at Progress College in Umzinto where she registered to complete her matric. “It is very exciting to know that I have achieved this. And now when I see my last-born celebrate this moment I know exactly how it feels!” she said.

Premi added that she had always yearned to complete her matric. “I got married after completing standard nine and then I had my four children.

“Between being a mother and a housewife I never found the time until last year.

“I thought with Brandon finishing matric it would be the perfect time to finish mine,” she added.

Mother and son did not spend much time studying together however. “We had our own routines, … but he was very supportive and we used to discuss papers,” she added.

Brandon said: “It’s actually quite weird finishing matric with your mother! But it’s also unique.”

He added that he was very proud of his mum’s achievement. “There are so many young people who drop out of school and just give up. Even at her age and with all her responsibilities she still achieved her dream. That’s amazing!”

Premi encouraged other older people to complete their matric.
