suspect in Jasmine-lee case isolated

THE 23-year-old man from Brakpan who stands accused of the rape and murder of Jasmine-Lee Pretorius (4), has been moved to a place of safety where he is being held in isolation after death threats were made against him.

Pastor Colin Bam, Jasmine-Lee’s maternal grandfather, said other inmates had asked him and other family members of Jasmine-Lee whether they should “deal” with the suspect.

“I am not ready to talk to the accused or forgive him, but I will not allow that a man be killed,” said Bam.

Both sets of grandparents said they did not attend the court case in Brakpan for fear of reprisals from the community. Jasmine-Lee’s parents, Sasha-Lee Bam and Morné Pretorius, are currently under police protection because several people in the community blame them for giving the murderer the opportunity to rape and kill their child on her father’s bed and then hide her body underneath it.

The accused appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s court last week. The case continues tomorrow.
