two ‘robbers’ shot dead by guards

2012-06-02 00:00

TWO suspected robbers wielding a hammer were killed at an upmarket Umhlanga mall yesterday when they tried to overpower two guards dropping off money.

Both were shot dead after launching a vicious attack on two SBV Services guards who were delivering cash for an ATM at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping just after 1 pm.

The incident took place in a service passage, away from shoppers and store staff.

A third guard involved in the drop-off was unharmed.

Ken Davidson, senior facilities manager at Old Mutual Property, owners of Gateway said, police were investigating.

“One SBV guard and the SBV custodian were attacked and injured when suspects hit them with a hammer.

“Shots were fired and the two suspects were shot dead.”

The injured guards were taken in a serious condition to Umhlanga Hospital.

One was carrying wounds from the hammer attack while his colleague suffered a gunshot wound.

It isn’t clear who fired the shot that hit the guard.
