u19 Cricket: Great weekend for Inland

2009-11-30 00:00

THE KZN Inland U19 cricket team overcame the loss of an entire day’s play to beat Griqualand West U19 by three wickets at the Maritzburg Oval on Saturday.

This three-day match saw the whole of Friday’s play washed away, while Thursday realised just 64 overs, yet a determination to extract victory out of the quagmire meant Inland adapted to the circumstances on Saturday and it paid off handsomely.

Griquas were all out for 220 on Thursday, while Inland declared on 102 for two on Saturday, giving them two sessions to win the match.

Griquas’ second dig hardly filled two hours’ cricket as Calvin Savage and captain Matthew Hulett knocked them over with relative ease. Set 245 to win, Inland scored at just under five to the over with in-form opening batsman Gareth Roderick and all-rounder Hulett steadily hauling in the target.

From an Inland perspective, the outstanding performances were bowler Nathan Roberts’ four-wicket harvest in Griquas’ first innings, Hulett’s six for 85 match figures to go with that vital 70, and Roderick’s innings of 53 not out and 72.

A good weekend for the province was capped with the news that new KZN Cricket Union high-performance consultant Richard Pybus, Cricket SA’s 2009 Coach of the Year, has as part of his job description a requirement that he spends time with KZN Inland players.
