THE uMgungundlovu District Municipality has now officially become a water services authority. As part of their turn-around strategy, the municipality has been working towards initiating and providing consumers with an efficient water billing system and this finally came to fruition on July 1.
Rainbow Chicken has pledged to support this initiative and recently handed over their first water bill to the municipality. After handing over the R2 million cheque, Rainbow Chicken’s agricultural manager in KZN, Dr Sanjay Maharaj, said it was their responsibility to contribute to a working government.
Municipal manager Sbu Khuzwayo said July 1 was significant because from then on, the municipality will be able to bill their consumers directly for the first time. He lauded Rainbow Chicken’s action and called for partnerships between the public and private sectors. The R2 million will be put back into the municipality and will go a long way in sustaining good governance and social responsibility, he said.
Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee said although the municipality have initiated an effective billing system, there may have been some teething problems, so they appeal to their consumers to bear with them.
He said all those who wish to pay for this service will be able to do so within a short space of time. Khuzwayo said all technical glitches will be sorted out by June 10 and by then all service centres are expected to be operational.
In the mean time, customers are encouraged to go to their nearest FNB branch, post office and Easy Pay if they would like to access this service.
