uMgungundlovu tops HIV prevalence in KZN

WORLD Aids Day yesterday brought a sobering reminder that the battle is not over, and that Pietermaritzburg is in one of the districts hardest hit.

Speaking at a function in Mooi River, KZN Finance MEC Ina Cronjé reminded guests that uMgungundlovu is one of the districts with the highest prevalence of HIV and Aids in the province, at 42,2%.

“As government we spend millions of rands treating people who are infected with HIV and Aids. We will not stop this and we will not discriminate against them.

“But we do not want this to be a vicious cycle. We must stop new infections. But we expect everyone to take responsibility for own lives. I want us to go out there and make a difference,” said Cronjé.

The Treatment Action Campaign’s message for the day highlighted its fears over dwindling funding. This year’s theme is “Getting to Zero — zero new infections, zero discrimination, zero Aids-related deaths”. This requires a concerted effort and adequate funding, said spokesperson Ntombizonke Ndlovu.

Cronjé was accompanied by the speaker of the KZN legislature, Peggy Nkonyeni, and her deputy Mtholephi Mthimkhulu. — WR.
