uMlazi hijacking: woman found alive

2009-10-27 00:00

THE woman whom police feared dead after she and her boyfriend were hijacked in uMlazi has been found.

Illovo woman Makhosi Msele and her boyfriend, Blessing Ngubane, were hijacked two weeks ago by a group of armed men.

The couple had been driving through uMlazi’s S Section when they were accosted by two hijackers.

One of the men got into the driver’s seat of the Volvo and drove towards the N2 highway near Isipingo. Both suspects, believed to be in their early 20s, were carrying handguns.

Ngubane managed to jump out of the moving vehicle, but was shot twice by one of the suspects before they drove off, leaving him for dead. Msele was made to sit in the back with one of the hijackers.

Local police found the Volvo was on the N2 near Isipingo the next day. There was no sign of Msele and police feared the hijackers had killed her.

uMlazi police spokesman Superintendent Buhle Ngidi said Msele was found at her home in Illovo three days after the hijacking.

“She told police that the hijackers left her about 200 metres from where Ngubane had been shot. She was scared, but managed to find her way home,” he said.

Msele did not report the hijacking to police.

Ngubane is in a stable condition in a Durban hospital. No arrests have been made.
