THE South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) marched yesterday against what they call “panty deployment” by the ANC Moses Mabhida regional executive committee (REC) within uMngeni Municipality in Howick yesterday.
The ANC and its alliance partners Cosatu and the SA Communist Party were also there to support a call for the removal of the uMngeni mayor, Mbali Myeni, and all the councillors that were allegedly imposed by the REC. They say the council chose people who could easily be manipulated into taking part in corrupt activities.
They handed over a memorandum outlining their demands. These included the recalling of the mayor, rooting out corruption, feedback on the forensic report on the investigation carried out against the municipality, and they also demanded that people be given their title deeds.
The memorandum was handed over to a Co-operative Government and Traditional Affairs official Sibusiso Mkhize, who received it on behalf of MEC Nomsa Dube.
Profanities against the provincial executive committee (PEC), the REC leadership and Myeni were the order of the day for the protesters. They promised to stage a rolling mass action on July 18.
