uMngeni: municipality warns of employment scam

2012-09-18 00:00

EMPLOYMENT scams are rife in the Howick and Mpophomeni areas, uMngeni Municipality has warned.

It has emerged that unscrupulous individuals posing as recruiters have been offering employment opportunities in a factory to be built in Mpophomeni.

The Umgeni acting general manager for local economic development, John Dlamini, said the municipality had found that the recruiters claim a R130 fee for employment.

“The individuals claim that this is a recruitment programme by uMngeni Municipality.”

Dlamini said an investigation was under way to arrest the individuals involved.

“uMngeni Municipality calls on anyone who has information in this regard to contact the local economic development office to assist with the investigation.”

Dlamini said that for recruitment the municipality used mainstream media or internal vacancy circulars to advertise job opportunities.

“We would like to emphasise that at no stage will any municipal department or individual request candidates to make payments to secure positions in the public service, nor will any position be offered unless all recruitment procedures, including short-listing and interviews, have been conducted,” he added.
