uMngeni: ratepayers to meet mayor

2011-06-27 00:00

THE uMngeni Ratepayers’ Association Forum is to meet Mayor Mbali Myeni today to find a way forward in its battle to get a fairer rates increase in the town.

Forum chair Mano Naidoo said they are hoping dialogue and negotiation will get the council to reduce the rates burden on residents.

“We want to inform the mayor that we can bring in a guaranteed additional R10 million to the rates coffer with a further R10 million that could be in the offing. With this offer we will be able to increase the rates revenue in the town. In return we would want to be assured by the municipality that it will lower the amount it is asking from residents,” said Naidoo.

He said the forum is negotiating with foreign investors to assist in establishing a skills development centre in uMngeni with emphasis on development in Mphophomeni.

“Our aim through youth groups is to strive for upliftment of the entire uMngeni region,” he said.

He said the forum remains committed to fairer valuations of properties and to reduce the rates randage.
