uMngeni rates: Mayor to meet with residents

2011-07-07 00:00

THE new mayor of uMngeni Municipality, Mbali Myeni, has accepted an invitation from the area’s rates forum to address residents on the current rates hike.

The public meeting takes place in the Howick West Community Hall on Sunday July 10 at 1.30 pm.

The mayor will be accompanied by officials and the municipal valuer and she will explain the rationale behind the new rates tariff that came into effect on July 1, 2011. The high rates will be due for payment at the end of July.

uMngeni Rates Forum chairperson Mano Naidoo urged residents to turn up in their numbers to show the municipality they are concerned about the increases, which he said will impact on household budgets. The forum has already presented information to the mayor that shows the average rates increase throughout Howick and Hilton is 40%, while that in Howick West is 60%

Naidoo said the meeting will also offer ratepayers an opportunity to clarify any queries they may have and he called on them to spread the word and attend the meeting with their own questions and examples of how the rates increases will affect them personally. “It is only through active participation that this problem that affects most ratepayers can be resolved.”

The uMngeni Rates Forum is made up of the Hilton Ratepayers Association, the Howick West Ratepayers Association and the Concerned Ratepayers/Residents Group of Howick.
