uMtshezi mayor to chair region

BONGANI Dlamini is the new ANC chairperson for the Okhahlamba (uThukela) region.

The uMtshezi mayor and ANC Youth League provincial executive (PEC) member was elected to this position at the regional conference over the weekend.

At the conference in Ladysmith, Dlamini beat Siphiwe Mazibuko for the top ANC position in the district, while MPL Winile Zondi was elected as his deputy. Maphitha Sithole became the regional secretary. ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala confirmed the results and said about 400 delegates from all ANC wards in the uThukela district area had participated at the weekend conference.

“We want to appreciate and thank ANC members in the Okhahlamba region for participating in the successful conference,” he said. “The conference was characterised by robust debates, which reflect the character of the ANC as the organisation.

“We want to congratulate the elected leadership and hope that they will rise and be equal to the tasks of the organisation.”

Okhahlamba was one of the four ANC regions within KZN that were struggling to hold its regional conferences because of some branches’ failure to gather enough members to vote at branch conferences and other succession problems.

Other hotly-contested regions are eThekwini, Moses Mabhida (Pietermaritzburg) and Preva Khumalo (kwaDukuza/Stanger) which held its conference last week.
