workshop for teachers

2011-09-21 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal’s Museum service will hold a workshop for teachers at its office today, focusing on the role of museums to help make history lessons come alive for both the pupils and teachers.

Chief museum scientist Trinity Tshisevhe said the museum has become aware that most teachers know little about museums and the role that they play in the community.

“We want to encourage creating a mutual partnership where museums benefit from the pupils visit and vice versa.

“This is part of our outreach programmes, which promote awareness about the role that museums play in education here in Maritzburg, especially when it comes to careers that can come from museums for pupils who are interested in history, astrology or art and want to pursue these interests.

“The pupils can get more ideas from various museums.

“This will be a platform where we can share ideas of how to incorporate this element into the curriculum,” said Tshisevhe.

Under the Department of Arts and Culture, the KZN Museum provides its professional services to 36 of the department’s affiliate museums in the province.

The workshop will be in a form of an interaction information session, and teachers will be encouraged to come up with their own views and expectations.
