DStv unveils new M-Net Series channels

Durban - The long-gestating plan to turn the M-Net Series channel (DStv 114) into a high definition (HD) TV channel on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV platform and grow the brand into an expanded TV channel subset is finally happening.

M-Net Series will be split into M-Net Series Showcase, the only confirmed new HD channel, and M-Net Series Reality for premium subscribers and M-Net Series Zone available to Compact and Mobile subscribers.

MultiChoice made their plans official by revealing the major upgrade to its M-Net Series channel brand at M-Net's media roadshow at the Fairmont Zimbali Resort in Durban on Wednesday.

HD channel

The flagship M-Net Series channel will be rebranded as the HD M-Net Series Showcase and air on the new DStv channel number 113.

M-Net Series Reality will feature reality shows on channel 115 and M-Net Series Zone on channel 114 will be a rerun channel with previously aired seasons of shows.

M-Net Series has been under constant change since the channel started, first as The Series Channel which showed only old library titles of American shows similar to TopTV's Fox Retro channel.

'Plans began more than a year ago'

Plans began more than a year ago to upgrade M-Net Series to HD status and to add more M-Net Series channels onto the DStv bouquet, but were postponed in favour of relaunching DStv's movie channel offering.

Some of the shows that M-Net Series Showcase on channel 113 will feature include new action series Defiance and The Carrie Diaries.

Viewers can also look forward to these new seasons of returning series:True Blood VI, Castle V, Criminal Minds VIII,  Pretty Little Liars III, Mad Men VI, Army Wives VIII, Teen Wolf II, Grimm I and Supernatural VIII.

M-Net Series Reality will have "the best conversational reality series depicting real talent, real people and real stories on channel 115". Shows to be aired on this channel include Real Housewives of New York, Real Housewives of Orange County, Junior MasterChef II, Life After Top Chef, America's Got Talent, The Face I, Ready for Love I and Fashion Star.

The schedule for M-Net Series Zone (DStv 114) has not been locked down, however the channel on 114 will "offer the best in uninterrupted bundled episodes of series that viewers may have missed."

The Showcase and Reality channels will only be available to Premium subscribers, and Showcase in HD only to those with an HD PVR decoder. Zone will be available to Compact and Mobile subscribers.

The new channels will go live on 9 July.
