'Grand Sham' no crisis

2004-11-23 07:27

Some might think that the Springboks' end of year tour has turned out to be somewhat of a grand sham... I hate to be the optimist amongst us but what were we expecting - miracles?

One of the comments made to me on Saturday night while I took in the Black Eyed Peas was - "the Boks are paid a bloody fortune to train and play - why don't they produce results?"

I don't fit into this segment of the rugby watching fraternity. Rather I am hopefully a little more realistic, and what I believe to be sensible about our players' endurance and not their ability.

Unfortunately we did lack true Bok gusto at the weekend and yes, it was disappointing... but - and I can just see some you rolling your eyes as you read this... have you ever considered what our rugby boys have endured prior to this end of year tour?

I marvel at the fact that the Boks are able perform during the Tri-Nations given that they have just participated in what may as well be 11 Test matches in the Super 12.

How do their bodies withstand that kind of punishment?

Chatting with Victor Matfield earlier in the year I was remarkably surprised at his consistency and durability - maybe it's something that these players develop over a period of time.

Recognition of our provincial rugby

But how can those who watch with a beer in hand (and a belly to make a sumo wrestler jealous) expect that to last all year? While it is always difficult to stomach a loss to England - at least we can draw some positives out of the game.

How about Mr Habana - not recognised by the Twickenham faithful surely, but the commentators were very quick to note his speed in the Currie Cup. It's fantastic that there is once again recognition of our provincial rugby on the international scene.

The last three weeks of articles have certainly stirred up some debate - which I have thoroughly enjoyed. To those who have an opinion please share it, I am sitting open-eared and minded.

Hopefully your enthusiasm will inspire further debate at News24. Even if it's not face-to-face at least we get to share views in a constructive forum. I look forward to your thoughts. Later.
