Mourinho is the man

2005-03-01 12:54

Jose Mourinho is the best thing to happen to soccer in ten years.

Let me clarify that quickly. Mourinho's hushing up of the Liverpool fans during the Carling Cup Final was not becoming of a soccer manager but rather the behaviour of a playground schoolboy.

It's not necessary to incite soccer fans - and the last person who should be doing that, is the man who controls one of the most expensive collections of footballers in the world.

Having said that I am consistently impressed with his brashness and boldness and his fobbing off of the British media.

Heaven knows those paparazzi and sensation seeking nutcases have been intimidating not only soccer managers since the rind pest, but the players and their families too.

My distaste for these feral vermin though is not the point of this article. It is to highlight the cocky approach of a man who has everything to win and nothing to lose - as he candidly admitted in an interview after their second loss in a week.

He's not your usual run of the mill type manager who takes "each game as it comes" and who is okay with average outcomes. But then one might say that about all managers.

Mourinho though brings a new flavour to the soccer world. If the club doesn't like him he goes, if he doesn't like the club he goes. Not a care in the world.

My favourite moment thus far was his response to the snotty journalist who asked if he felt that he should be under pressure. Mourinho made it candidly clear that there is no pressure, only trophies to be won.

I suppose it's easier when you have an unlimited cheque book and a bench that could beat half of the English Premiership - literally. But this guy is sensational.

He's not out to win friends, feels nothing for those he offends, and most certainly is a man with a mission. Other managers of sport should take a feather out of his cap.

Don't suppose that any of the local coaches can offer up the same bravado. Unfortunately for the plonkers running our soccer teams - that's all it is.

Mourinho, like him or hate him, is the man.
