Our cricket is on the up

Everyone's asking me which South African will play in the World X1 against the Aussies? It would be great to name a couple of players - but at this stage only Jacques Kallis, and maybe Shaun Pollock would make the grade.

What about Herschelle? Our naughty boy made headlines again a few weeks ago, but his natural talent continues to shine through. Perhaps if he weren't so eratic I'd give him a double thumbs up for the one-dayers and Test against the Aussies later this year.

Does this mean our cricket is in trouble... By not being able to forcibly include any other national team players in the line up it would suggest that the rest of the Proteas are not world class.

Not so say I. I believe we are watching the development of a great philosophy in our cricket selection that is far more aggressive, adventurous and risky than ever before witnessed.

The return of Adam Bacher, the inclusion of Justin Kemp and Ashwell Prince's re-appearance give me great faith. Mostly because it shows a willingness to try everything to win.

Not all the selections will pay off, but so what. In terms of creating a winning team at whatever cost will be worth it.

I watched the presentation of the Allan Border Medal with great interest last week as Michael Clarke after only four months in the top tier received the most prestigious award of them all.

It made me think that if the Aussies can find / develop / create such a player so could we. In fact I think our answer to him may very well be in the shape of AB De Villiers.

Anyhow, Clarke showed them all up and humbly accepted the coveted award, voted as the most deserving player ahead of the players of a world champion team who also happen to be the number one Test playing nation.

The players practically got there without him, but with him and several others being groomed to play alongside him, this side may become unbeatable for years to come.

However, if the UCB continues upon its current path, the face of SA cricket could change at a rapid rate, one quick enough to topple the Aussies from their lofty perch.

Go You Good Things!.
