SA should pull out of Super 12

2005-03-30 13:00

I went on the air on Saturday and said that all the Super 12 coaches should be replaced. I'd like to amend that statement.

Keep the coaches. Pull South African teams out of the Super 12 altogether.

I spoke before the Sharks had recorded their victory over the Brumbies - restoring some South African pride in the tournament.

Well done Dick Muir, I applaud your team's win and their performance.

Before that result though, our teams had recorded 12 losses out of the 14 games played against Aussie and Kiwi opponents.

The Super 12 is a tournament that SA Rugby should pull out of. Unfortunately there's too much money involved, too many salaries, too many television rights and franchise merchandise to be sold. But let's be honest. This is not a competition.

As Professor Tim Noakes points out - no SA side has ever finished top of the log. He lists the travel fatigue as the main cause.

The extensive four week trip to Australasia coupled with over training and over playing does not help either he says. The history of the tournament is clear. Our boys don't stand a chance.

True the Stormers and the Sharks have defied the odds at times, but ultimately our teams are staring down a barrel every February.

A competition or a long Springbok trial

There is no getting past the fact that we are consistently at a disadvantage - which leads me to question - is this a competition or just a long Springbok trial that we don't need and could easily go back to the old way?

This does still not explain why our teams are losing their home games. One of my esteemed colleagues suggests that we look at those who put the coaches in charge.

Do we need the likes of Nick Mallet back at the helm? Or do we need international experience? Every year seems to get worse. How can the Aussie and Kiwi players be so much better, stronger, better prepared, more tactically aware - while our boys flail?

Don't get me wrong I want to see four wins out of four every weekend.

See our rugby step up and take apart everything in its sight. I am a proud supporter of SA Rugby. It does feel though like this tournament sinks us into weekly lament, horrible sporting depression, and an unpatriotic shadow is being cast on the bigger picture.
