Sports bosses a sad, bad joke

2004-11-09 07:23

What a tangled web we weave blah blah blah.

South African sport's administrators have continued to prove one thing: they are not on top of their game.

After watching the weekend's rugby triumph over the Welsh it became plainly obvious to me that when sport is left to its true dynamic, i.e. the playing of the game by the people best suited for the job, then things do generally run smoothly.

Why and how did it take us so long to get to Jake White? This man is pure genius. Look at how he's revived Monty's career, and ok he nearly suffered the Eric Simons-Shaun Pollock "we didn't know" fate but the Grand Slam is still on.

What had the governing body of rugby been thinking when they asked Rudolf Straeuli to take the job? While Rudolf was a great player let's make no bones about his coaching ability at national level.

But the proof lies buried in the cheese-cake pudding. Look for sheer talent, ignore the BS and make our sport great. Hats off to SA Rugby!

What if our Olympic, soccer and cricket administrators were just as sharp? These people insist on creating media opportunities for themselves, hogging the limelight, when our athletes are the ones who deserve the true credit.

It reminds me of my junior sport playing days when "the committee" would show bias towards a player whose father just happened to be an associate of the chairperson.

It's hard to believe that at the upper echelons of sport this ethic still exists. Sports administrators, by their very nature, are slovenly, money-grabbing and downright rude.

There are a few who stand out though, such as Dr Ali Bacher. Working on a project for young kids in Soweto opened my eyes to his vision of a cricket stadium in the heart of Soweto, Dobsonville.

Who would've thought that the UCB could be so forward-thinking, sinking money into the hands of the people who want and need it most - just to participate in the sport?
