Sports fans are the worst

2005-02-22 13:12

Sports fans are the worst. The scenes on television this weekend at the Manchester United v Everton game as well as the Rangers v Celtic game sickened me to my stomach.

What drives a sports-loving individual who wants his side to win so badly to throw coins and cell phones at players? Where are these people from, how do they think?

The concept of supporting a team is to will them on to win. Not to act like a gladiatorial slayer and mow down a team's opposition. Of course this is the literal form of player abuse, but there are several other instances.

Have you even give a second thought to the new "craze" of monkey calling at black players particularly in Spain?

The Spanish League should be ashamed of itself. Given their tainted past, and their national coach's antics, Fifa should see fit to shut the league down and prevent teams from having supporters.

And it's everywhere. I gave up football when in an Under-19 match fans ran on to the field to threaten our opponents with guns. It was not a game anymore.

When will fans learn that Shankly's statement about "sport being more important than life or death" is not to be taken literally. Grow up.

Give up the fights, the hooligans, the people that taint the entertainment that top professionals provide.

They don't do it to be threatened and abused. They play because they are the best. It irks my constitution that because one's team is losing some half-brained spectator attempts to injure a player on the field - this is that person's profession!

How would that person feel if the player came round to his/her place of work and did the same. That'll put some perspective on it.

I know you're thinking about Eric Cantona's karate kick, and the debacle in the NBA last year, but these are exceptions to the rule.

Support your team by all means, sing, dance clap, stand on your head if it makes you happy. But should you cross that line and look to damage a player and their career - I hope the long of arm of the law reaches out to you with a knockout uppercut.
