Stick with Jennings

2005-01-18 11:47

What a disappointment. I left the Wanderers Sunday convinced that Monday would be a drab day of cricket, with the English forcing us to stand in the field looking to tire us out for the big finale in Centurion.

However, as the gloomy weather lifted on Monday, the mood of this country soured as first Marcus Trescothick plundered our bowlers, and then Matthew Hoggard, our batsmen.

Cricket, as they say, is a funny game. It all seemed sewn up, and yet in the space of 4 sessions, the second best team in the world had torn the heart out of the series and set South Africa the ominous task of needing to win the final Test, just for a draw.

Having said that, I would have taken a draw at the beginning of the series.

It's easy now to gloss over the performances of the team and point fingers, but I must give a thumbs up to Bouch, Herschelle and Smithy - we were after all beaten by a better side...

Ultimately though I am left wondering where the next wave of cricketers is coming from. Turned on the telly later in the day to watch the new Aussie batting sensation - who made three first class hundreds in three Tests. Just how long are our boys going to take to find this kind of form?

As unorthodox as Jet Jennings may sound - using methods like locking players out of the lunch room in the old days - he's a fighter. Just given his media profile we all know this is a man who'll take on Goliath any day. I hope the powers that be extend his contract for that reason - so he's around when we take on the Aussies.

Back to Sunday - what a sensational response from us South Africans - at the Wanderers. I have not been to any of the other Tests and thus cannot vouch for our support, but in true Gauteng style, the boys and girls gave it to the English, with chants of Shosholoza, Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika, and even a bunch who came round singing "stand up if you hate the barmy army".

It wasn't malicious, nor ugly - just a good bit of gamesmanship from the fans at the Bull Ring!

Good on yer - let's hope those going to Blue Bull country this week can follow your lead. Later
