My list of loves

After my last column about the ten things I hate about life I was challenged by some readers to make a list of loves instead. What's disturbing is that it was easier to write about what I hate than about what I love. What's up with that?

In any case, here goes:

  • My mother is the most incredible human being ever to have lived. She continues to spoil me rotten and loves me so unconditionally. Moving back with her was the best decision I ever made, as we've reconnected and continue to bond in a new and exciting way. I realise that my previous bi-weekly visits and intermittent phone calls were just not enough, and I'm grateful for the privilege of spending time with her. Her emphasis on education has held me in good stead, and her unshakable belief in me has given me the confidence to achieve the seemingly impossible.
  • The laughter of a child is just irresistible to me. It reminds me of all that is pure and good in the world and helps me not to take myself so seriously.
  • My business partners are just simply the coolest, most honest dudes you'll ever come across. They greet me with kisses every day (yes, every day) and I literally trust them with my life. Of course we have disagreements from time to time, but we're big enough to come out the other side unscathed, simply because we care about each other. Best of all, they are both married to amazing women who are truly the loves of their lives.
  • There is no replacement for a great book. You know, the kind you can't wait to get home to read, only to slow down towards the end to try and prolong the delightful experience. It's another of my mom's gifts to me - she taught me to read even before I started school.
  • Afternoon naps. Ahhhh. I find naps indulgent and comforting, especially after a heavy week of 14 hour days that can sap me of all my energy. After taking a nap I just feel like a heavy fog has been lifted.
  • I love sunsets in general, but I love Cape Town sunsets best. They are pretty spectacular, and each one is unique.
  • There's nothing quite like a good girlfriend, and I'm blessed with some fantastic sistas in my life. They are loving, supportive and giving, and the best company for an Anti-Valentines Day party.
  • My car. I know it's not cool to be attached to material goods, but I love my little baby. By the way, methinks six gears should be standard. But that's just me.
  • I love discovering good music and good films, both old and new. A good flick can make me happy for days on end. With music I'm so compulsive if I love a song I could play it twenty times in a row. I've just downloaded (legally) The Temptations' How can you say it's over after not hearing it for years and It's making me a very happy camper. In my car I keep playing Joni Mitchell's Both sides now, which is not a happy song but is so perfect as a piece of music it just leaves me in awe.
  • I love positive people and I'm making an effort to be more positive myself. We're on such a downer in the country right now and its just exhausting listening to people with nothing good to say. Even if you wake up in a great mood, all it takes is listening to talk radio to really put a damper on your entire day. I do believe in the laws of attraction, so I'm trying to be more positive in my attitude, thus hopefully drawing it back to me.
