All eyes on the paparazzi

2005-02-04 08:57

The paparazzi are the people we love to hate!

It may be wrong to invade someone's privacy, but oh how we love the pictures they take!

Traditionally, when we think of the paparazzi, we think of men with huge cameras and super-long zoom lenses hanging from a tree or waiting outside a club for a superstar to appear. Today, however, these people are taking on a new face.

With the cellphone becoming more accessible to everyone, not to mention the latest cellphones with cameras, celebrities have few places to hide.

Even in South Africa, it's referred to as the "candid camera" school of photography.

Overseas, newspapers and magazines that feature celebrity shots are willing to pay a fair price for pictures of celebrities.

And that's not even for the real juicy stuff such as Angelina snogging Brad (we wish we could see that), but for the ordinary stuff - Cameron buying groceries or even Minki walking down the street.

Catriona Andrew's take on it

Speaking to ex-Egoli star, now freelance actress Catriona Andrew, the ball has already started rolling.

She doesn't mind people taking pictures of her, and sees it as a compliment, but hates it when people are sneaky about it. She thinks that hiding behind a pillar, or taking the picture at a weird angle, is degrading.

Cat doesn't worry about finding herself in a compromising position, and if you'd like to take a picture of or with her, she says you should at least be decent about it, and have the guts to come up to her and ask her permission.

She finds it invasive, to catch out of the corner of her eye, someone taking a picture of her with a cellphone.

She's more than happy to oblige and usually asks if someone else would snap the camera so that the fan is in the picture with her.

I agree, it doesn't seem very honest to be taking pictures of someone without their permission.

I wouldn't like anyone to take a picture of me without me knowing (I have a good and a bad side). Usually, people stick their hand out in front of the lense when they don't want to be snapped, so I can relate (on a tiny level) to what Cat experiences.

But is that the picture you want? Or as it goes these days, is that the picture the media is prepared to buy? You smiling next to Arno, or Arno having scrambled eggs for Sunday breakfast at the café? At the end of the day, the public is partially to blame - this is what we love to see. It's irresistible!

One thing's for sure, with technology changing so fast and more and more of it being brought into everyone's home, coupled with a celeb crazy society, celebs might be spending a lot more time at home.

  • Nadia Padayachi is a celeb fanatic! She's seen lots of celebs in compromising positions, but regrets that she didn't have her camera with her!
