Give me some publicity and I’ll “give back”. And if you film my rich boys’ club “feeling the plight of the poor” on Sandton pavements, I’ll give even more. Shoot me now! 

It’s Mandela Month and the publicity hounds are out, seeking recognition for “giving back”. 67 minutes of fame – that’s all it is. If the spirit of giving is genuine there’s no need to spend 67 hours putting together a media plan for an act of kindness you’ll speak about for next 67 weeks. 

Holier than thou scribe, I hear some “good Samaritan” say. What has this writer given to the poor lately? It’s the green eyed monster talking... Nothing wrong with a bit of publicity for a good cause blah blah blah. Go tell it to the birds. 

Here’s some truth – giving comes naturally to a kind spirit. It’s only when the recipient says “thanks” that the giver realises they’ve touched someone’s life. If it happens that some thought has to go into the gift, the giver still has some humanity not to seek glory from the so called “selfless act”. 

It would be nice – in the spirit of what Madiba stood for – to have someone “giving back” the truth and expose the hypocrisy of these “noble acts” before some crazy celeb takes a selfie with malnourished children and goes mad with it on social media. Just thinking out loud ...
