18 years for son's murder

Maliepetsane Mokoena, who suffocated her son and burnt his body, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

She admitted to killing er son because she wanted to hurt her former husband and wanted to prevent her son from forming a relationship with her ex's new wife.

She was also sentenced to two years for malicious damage to property, which will run concurrently with the 18 years.

Last year in January, Maliepetsana suffocated her eight year-old son while he slept. She later loaded his body into her car and burnt it on the side of a road in the nearby suburb of Dawn Park.

"He was sleeping peacefully when he was killed by his mother, who was driven by the desire to hurt her former husband and stop his new wife from bonding with him [the son]. His life went out violently," said Judge Ndawoyakhe Tshabalala.

Judge Tshabalala said what the woman did was unjustifiable.
