5-year-old raped by nanny

HIS bright eyes sparkle with delight as he trots up to his parents. He’s so excited to see them that he breaks into a cheeky dance as they approach and then grins from ear to ear. This five-year-old is as cute as can be, and it’s hard to believe that anyone would abuse such a carefree kid. It’s even harder to believe that the woman who raped him was his trusted nanny who has recently been sentenced to life in prison.

“Are these your friends?” asks the bouncy boy looking up at us as his parents lead us towards their flat in Zondela near Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal. His parents nod and smile and his mom pats him on the head as he runs beside her.

“This is my son,” says his father. “The boy who . . .” His voice trails off and a frown appears on his face. Unable to complete his sentence he leads us into their bachelor flat with its bed, two chairs, a small table, a music system and TV set. On the wall hangs the boy’s freshly ironed school uniform. The father sits on the bed. He looks tired.
