Indian police arrested six men for the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl.

Indian police arrested six men for the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl, officials said on Tuesday.

The Delhi-based teenager said she had travelled to the western city of Jaipur after she had been promised employment as a security guard.

"She was taken to a hotel room where 10 men including the manager sexually assaulted her," said police officer Arvind Kumar.

"She managed to escape and filed the complaint, after which the arrests were made since Monday," he said.

The attack occurred on August 30 and medical tests confirmed rape, officials said.

Police suspect the hotel management and some people who knew the girl were part of a prostitution racket, and more arrests are expected likely soon.

India has been under the spotlight in recent years over the incidents of sexual violence against women.

In 2012, the fatal gang rape of a student on a bus in New Delhi led to a massive public outcry and tougher laws.

Recently, three men were sentenced to 20 years in jail for the gang rape of a Japanese tourist in Jaipur.
