Nduduzo Makhathini has been dubbed as one of the “greatest pianists South Africa has seen in a long time”, by jazz industry professionals. He is the 2015 the recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for jazz award.

Drum met Makhathini for a quick session at The Orbit, where he took us on a journey of how he wrote his song Umsunduzi, which he says was inspired by legendary jazz pianist, the late Bheki Mseleku.

Umsuduzi is a song about a river which is reminiscent of his days as a youth. Makhathini’s brings together a sense of identity, spirituality and poetry in his music.
