Africa's Richest Man

IN NIGERIA, the land of the "Big Man", he is the biggest. That's because he has just been declared the richest man in Africa by none other than Forbes magazine in its annual World's Billionaires list.

Aliko Dangote (54) is worth $13,8 billion (R94,3 billion) and climbed more than 300 places to No. 51 in the list of the world's richest people. He's now far ahead of big contenders such as South African billionaires Nicky Oppenheimer, who came in at number 136, and Patrice Motsepe at number 336.

At first glance, Dangote is an unlikely billionaire. In a country noted for dodgy deals in oil, he has made his fortune in much more humble goods: sugar, flour and cement – all focused initially on the local market.
