SANParks says it is unable to confirm immediately the whereabouts of four lions reportedly on the loose in the Matsulu area, believed to have escaped from the Kruger National Park.

SANParks spokesperson William Mabasa says, “We are not completely sure about the whereabouts of the lions and as soon as we have concrete information we will share this.”

Mabasa says the lions were spotted on Sunday evening, in the Matsulu area. SANParks rangers together with the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) have launched a search for the animals.

Farmers and communities are being advised to contact SANparks if they do spot the animal. Report of any sighting of the remaining lion still at large can be made to the authorities on 080010111, 0768019679 or 0137350197

In May five lions escaped the park, launching a two day search for the animals. Mabasa says it is unclear if these were the same lions.

The male lions were believed to have been forced out by a larger pride of lions in the park. They were successfully darted and re-captured without incident and dropped off "deep inside Kruger”.
