An Alexandra police officer has been killed after shooting dead his wife, two relatives and a colleague at the local police station

on Wednesday evening.

The officer, 31, a constable who worked as a court orderly at the Alexandra Magistrate's Court, is believed to have followed his wife to the police station following a domestic dispute, the SA police service said on Twitter.

The woman was opening a domestic violence case at about 18:00, when the officer opened fire, shooting her, the relatives, as well as the officer (59) who was assisting the woman in opening a case.

The officer then fled to his home, where he was followed by a number of officers.

"As const [sic] arrived near home he observed SAPS members & fired shots; SAPS returned fire, fatally wounding him" the police tweeted.

Provincial commissioner Lesetja Mothiba sent condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased.

The names of the deceased will be released once the next of kin have been informed.

"There will be thorough investigation, also involving IPID [Independent Police Investigative Directorate]," he said.
