The ANC secured just over 50 % of the votes in Nkandla municipality.

The African National Congress had secured just over 50 percent of the votes in KwaZulu-Natal's Nkandla municipality, where President Jacob Zuma's residence is located, by late Thursday evening.

According to results at 11.05pm from the Electoral Commission of SA's national results operations centre in Pretoria, the ANC had 19,972 votes (52 percent) on the provincial ballot. The Inkatha Freedom Party was second with 15,010 votes (39 percent).

A total of 38,050 people were registered to vote in the municipality for Wednesday's elections.

Earlier this year, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela found that Zuma and his family unduly benefited from a R246 million security upgrade to his Nkandla homestead.

Opposition parties consistently referred to it as an example of the ANC-led government's excesses and corruption during their election campaigns.
