ANC conference declared open ...

President Zuma welcomes thousands of delegates, international guests and media

The  53rd ANC conference which is currently underway kicked off to an enthusiastic start this afternoon.

After standing in line for hours delegates from all nine province made their way into the plenary session in song and dance which reached fever point when ANC National Chaiperson  Baleka Mbethe  introduced President Jacob Zuma on stage.

"Zuma!  Zuma! "  most delegate shouted.

In his opening remarks Zuma said it was worth noting that the conference is taking place in Mangaung - the birthplace of the ANC.

He also made special mention of former President Nelson Manda who's currently hospitalized in a Pretoria hospital." He is 'Isithwalande' (Veteran)"  referring to Madiba's role as the first commander of Umkhonto Wesizwe.

He also said the membership of the ANC has increased over the past two elective conferences to over "a million audited members who are in good standing"

The conference is scheduled to end on Thursday.
