Gauteng's matriculation pass rate of 84.7 percent is proof of the importance placed on education in the province, the Gauteng ANC said on Tuesday.

"The results prove that there is consistency in the renewal of our schooling and education system," it said in a statement.

"It's a further demonstration that Gauteng has effective schools and well co-ordinated learning institutions."

Nevertheless, more work was needed.

"The results further strengthen our resolve to ensure that we speed [up] social transformation, particularly the delivery of quality education aimed at producing skilled individuals who will also be able to contribute towards the growth and development of society."

Gauteng notched up the top matriculation pass rate in the country.

The 2014 national matric pass rate was 75.8 percent. This was a 2.4 percentage point drop from 78.2 percent in 2013.
