Ancyl disbandment overdue: Cosas

The decision by the ANC to disband the ANC Youth League's national executive committee was long overdue, student organisation Cosas said on Tuesday.

"We welcome unreservedly and without any fear the disbandment (sic) of the weak, narrow, myopic and self-serving national leadership of the ANCYL," the organisation said in a statement.

"Such a wise and necessary political decision is long overdue."

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe announced on Monday that the ruling party had dissolved the ANCYL executive committee.

The decision was taken at a three-day NEC meeting at the weekend.

The Congress of SA Students said the ANCYL had failed to mobilise young people behind the vision of the ANC of building a united South Africa, and to strive for their socio-economic and political independence.

"The disbanded leadership will go down in history as the most counter-revolutionary leadership to emerge in the ANCYL. They have for a very long time defined themselves completely outside of the ANC."

The organisation called on members of the ANCYL to rally behind the decision of the ANC NEC to disband its youth structure's leadership.
