Archbishop Desmond Tutu turns 85

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is turning 85 years of age today.

The celebrations of this special day are taking place at the St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town today.

Speaking  at the event, Tutu said he and his wife were thankful for the support and love they have received from South Africans

“Leah and I are very deeply touched. Thank you, thank you, thank you,” he said.

To celebrate this day, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation will hold the sixth annual Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture.

The lecture will be held at the Artscape Theatre Centre tonight.

Tutu was born on 7 October 1931 in Klerksdorp, North West. He is a South African social rights activist and a retired Anglican bishop.

He became well known locally and international in the 80’s as an apartheid opponent and has been known to be the voice of reason, highly critical of the South African government.
