Baby Jake Matlala's widow speaks

The late Baby Jake Matlala, boxing superstar, was a small legend with a big heart. However, when he died in December 2013, he left his wife and two sons in severe financial distress.

The financial misfortunes of prizefighting boxers are legendary, and the sport often offers feast or famine careers. So it’s not surprising that the family of one of South Africa’s favourite sons of the ring have fallen on hard times.

The family of the late Jacob “Baby Jake” Matlala – wife Mapule and their two sons, Tshepo and Lesego – were reportedly kicked out of their home in Winchester Hills, south

of Jozi, after the bank repossessed the property a few days before he died in December last year. But, contrary to tabloid newspaper reports, Matlala and his family were not evicted from the house.

DRUM went to the Winchester Hills house three days before Baby Jake’s funeral in December 2013, to talk to the family.
