UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon praised Mandela for his visionary leadership in fight to dismantle apartheid.

He described Mandela as “a giant for justice and equality and human rights.”  And said that his legacy was profound and would continue to guide the world.

He was addressing media at the Nelson Mandela Centre for Memory ahead of the official Memorial Service scheduled today.

Ban Ki-Moon is scheduled to speak at the memorial.  He

“His remarkable compassion upon his release from Robben Island prison after 27 years, set South Africa immediately on a path of dialogue and reconciliation,” said Ki Moon.

“He was one of the towering heroes of our time and indeed any time.  We join together in sorrow for this mighty loss, but also in celebration of a mighty life.”

Ki-Moon related how he was profoundly moved by Nelson Mandela’s words on his first meeting with the former president at his home in Houghton Johannesburg during a state visit in February 2009.

“I thanked him for what he had been doing for humanity, particularly in ending apartheid,” said Ki Moon. Mandela responded: “It is not only me.  There were hundreds of known and unknown people who worked for the cause.”
