Basetsana Kumalo recovering well from a broken ankle

The crowning of 2016's Miss South Africa came with excruciating pain for former Miss South Africa and judge, Basetsana Kumalo, in a manner of speaking.

Two days before the crowning of this year's beauty queen, Bassie broke her ankle in a freak accident. This meant that she'd have to watch the show from a hospital bed.

Watching #MissSA2016 on my hospital bed. I had an unfortunate accident on Thursday. I went to watch my son play the piano at his school concert, as we were leaving I slipped in the rain, fell and broke my left and right side of my ankle(medial & lateral malleolus) and dislocated it in the process. The most excruciating pain of my entire existence. I have had two surgeries, first was reduction of the dislocation, second the fixation of the ankle with titanium pins and plates inserted yesterday. I believe everything happens for a reason, it could have been worse! Will be immobile for a while, but I'm so thankful that the hand of God has been with me throughout this journey. Thank you for all your prayers, concern, support and care. I am deeply grateful.

11 screws, pins and plate later, it is great to learn that the former beauty queen is recovering, on crutches though still in pain. In an Instagram post, Mrs Kumalo was grateful for being surrounded by love from family and friends, acknowledging that other people are going through tougher challenges than her.

We wish you a speedy recovery.
