Battered to death

HE BITES his lower lip when he looks at the front page of the newspaper.

Then he suddenly gets up to leave the bedroom, shutting his eyes tightly to stop the tears from falling.

Boitshepo Mogale (9) is hurting. He can’t stop staring at the picture of Blue Bulls prop Jacobus “Bees” Roux, the man who was arrested on suspicion of beating Boitshepo’s dad, Tshwane metro cop Sergeant Johannes Mogale, so badly that he died of his injuries.

“This is the man they say killed Daddy,” Boitshepo says as he gives the newspaper to his sister, Thato (15). The teenager is sitting on a mattress in the bedroom, comforting their mother, Margaret (35). Boitshepo was looking forward to 27 August because it was his birthday and his father had promised to buy him a BMX and a cake.

It was Johannes’ last night-shift duty and he planned to spend the day with his family, celebrating his son’s ninth birthday.

But Johannes never came home.
