The Blue Hats, Joburg’s new Jazz trio were recently launched at Yamaha World of Music in Sandton in an event attended by members of the press and industry insiders

With Bernice Boikanyo beating the skins as a drummer, the outfit were meant to swing. Swing they do in a rather severe and no-nonsense kind of way. Sylvester Mazinyane (keys) and Sipho Mabena (bass) are the rest of the members of the outfit whose name was inspired by an album by world famous Jazz band, the esteemed Yellow Jackets.

We spoke to Sylvester Mazinyane who told us his sophomore album is in the offing. Sylvester’s debut album, Down South was released to much fanfare more than ten years ago.

“I’m working on my second album and the tentative deadline for its release is sometime next year. Right now I’ll be busy doing gigs with Blue Hats but I’ll be laying down material for my sophomore album as well. The working title for the album is the same title: Down South Volume 2. The first album was a good recording, people loved it but they couldn’t access it. It’s issues around distribution.”
