“My mom went on her knees and cried. She had been praying for this day.”

For two years she sat at home with no hope of furthering her studies due to her family’s financial limitations. Going to university became just another dream for Karen Mthethwa.

But all that changed this year when television and radio personality Bonang Matheba came to her rescue by awarding her a bursary.

Talking to DRUM, Karen Mthethwa (20) says she knocked on many doors with no help, until she stumbled on Bonang’s tweet last year saying she needed 10 girls who had dreams of doing media studies and could not afford them.

“I jumped at the opportunity and sent my application through with my results and a motivational letter telling her about my life and my family background,” says Karen, who added that “my life will never be the same.”

Coming from a family where no-one is employed, Karen says her mom fought to get her through high school and going to varsity seemed an impossible dream. Karen says they got the news that she will be getting a bursary from Bonang.

She matriculated in 2014 with B’s and C’s from Letsibogo Girls school in Meadowlands, Soweto.

Now Karen, who will be doing media studies at Boston College vows,

“I will be giving this my all and making sure that I pass with flying colours”.
