We caught up with house music maestro, Zano, real name Thokozani Nzima.

The Oceans Apart singer’s first independent album, Colours Of My Soul just dropped. Though Zano is licensed to Universal Music Group, he says that he is signed to ZanoUrban Global Music, his record label.

He beams when he talks about his album, a 15-track masterpiece infused with dance, jazz and neo soul sounds. Colours Of My Soul features the likes of Ayanda Jiya, Nveigh, The Layabouts, Thiwe, Uhuru, Nathan Adams and more.

This moment right here is very special to me :):):) Spent months looking forward to this moment. It's here. It's real. Dream realised. #ColoursOfMySoulCDs #GODatWork

“All my focus is on this project. We are planning a 7-city tour of the album,” the Hello hit-maker said.

On his collaboration with Riky Rick, the transition was huge between genres according to Zano, but he learnt that “people respond well to great music”. After two years of having the Sondela beat and struggling to get the right vocalist for the song, Riky approached Nzima and the rest as they say, is history.

Zano’s wishlist of artists he’d like to work with includes Salif Keita, Oliver Mtukudzi, Cesar Evora, Jimmy Dludlu, Themba Mkhizeand Riky Rick (again). This he says is because he believes in versatility in creating music

“I want to take house music from the club to the concert hall,” he said.

We had to wait for a moment for Zano to calm down after asking him about #FillUpTheDome. More than appreciating the concept, Zano was in attendance on the night.

“Cassper killed it! Nobody has the right to compare him to other rappers on the continent. He opened doors for everyone, irrespective of genre. He showed us there’s power in dreams. This is the beginning of great things for African artists,” he said, excitedly.

Three things you don’t know about Zano:

  • He left the music in 2010 and only came back last year;
  • Acting opened doors in entertainment for him, not music;
  • He used to be a worship leader at church.

His message to the masses is simply this: “We live in an near where it’s extremely attractive to be yourself”

Find Love!
