Chasing waterfalls 1/4

'The teachers all hate me'

Thuli struggled to steady herself. She held her daughter Lucy’s school report in her hand, shocked and disappointed.

“What’s this?” She burst into her 16-yearold’s bedroom and threw the report at her daughter. It landed on the bed.

“You’ve failed every exam! At this rate you might not pass matric.”

Lucy continued to apply her lipstick, unmoved. She’d learnt how to deal with her mother when she was in a foul mood over the years.

“Are you deaf?” Thuli couldn’t stand her daughter’s quiet defiance. “Say something. Why are you dressing up?”

“Chill, mom. Don’t be so mad. The teachers all hate me.”

“Don’t play games, young lady. Do you think I enjoy working 12 hours a day cleaning other people’s homes to put you through high school? Do you want to end up like me, working for peanuts?

You have a chance to make something of T yourself, but you’re throwing that chance away.”

“Mom, let’s talk about this when I get back from the party I’ve been invited to. Philip’s coming to pick me up. He says he might have a job for me. That way I can help you financially.”

“I don’t want his dirty money. Stay away from that womaniser – he’s old enough to be your father! You know his reputation. He changed women like he changes shirts.

Not to mention his drug dealing.

“This is the time for you to concentrate on your schoolwork, not chase after men.

There are millions of men out there – they won’t run away. Finish your schooling first. You’re not going to that party.

Where did you get the money to buy that expensive dress? You’re chasing waterfalls and one of these days you might just drown.”

A car hooted outside the gate.

Without answering her mother’s questions, Lucy pushed past Thuli.

“Come back here! Where do you think you’re going? I told you can’t go!”

Thuli shouted after her daughter, following her outside.

She watched in disgust as her daughter got into the brand-new Mercedes Benz with its tinted windows. It quickly drove away.
