Two children, aged three and five, drowned in the Caluza River in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg, on Thursday afternoon, paramedics said.

"A group of children went swimming in the river and two of the children were swept downstream," ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said in a statement.

People nearby rushed to the river and pulled the bodies of the children out of the water about 300m downstream. When paramedics arrived, they found the two children dead on the scene.

Three other children who were in the group managed to get out of the water by themselves.
